Le Temps Du Repas Des Tits Chats (Kitten Mealtime)

CLICK HERE TO HEAR THE AUDIO TO THIS POST

This post is a translation into the Cajun language of a child’s short story from “Cuddy Duck” productions intitled “Kitten Mealtime.” The Cajun version does not rhyme.

Note that due to the plurality of the subject I am showing that in the translated title, “Le Repas Des Tits Chats.” The subjects participate in the meal all at one time.

Les tits chats dégrimpent de leur poteau (In the book they are first located seemingly on the second story of their domain.)

All in one kitty bed.)

Les tits chats se mettent tranquille

Pour leurs tits sommes de l’après-midi

Écoutez donc à leurs ronronnements

Et leurs tits miaulements aussi doux

To translate this short kiddie story into Cajun, I had to do some revamping of the story. However, the integrity of the English is not lost. Without the book’s pictures, one must use his or her imagination when relating it to children.

English version:

“Kitten Mealtime”

Little kittens awaken, and from the basket they hop. Here they come one by one, spilling over the top.

They skip and they scamper, prancing around. They tumble and wrestle all over the ground.

Mealtime is here! The kittens climb down their pole. They munch on their food and lap milk from a bowl.

The kitten’s tummies are full, since they have been fed. After a quick cleanup, it will be time for bed.

The kittens settle down for their afternoon snooze. Hear their gentle purrs and soft little mews.

Faire La Rencontre Et D’Autres Vaillants Mots

CLICK HERE TO HEAR THE AUDIO TO THIS POST

“Faire la rencontre” is a phrase that means “to make the acquaintance.” We could also say “faire la connaisance,” or “se rencontrer.” (”To make the knowledge of someone”, or “to meet each other.”)

“La rencontre” of course is “a meeting” of two or more people.

“Et d’autres vaillants mots” stands for “and other niceties, or nice words.”

“Bonjour” is the generic greeting one makes when meeting someone all during day light hours. However, Cajuns also use for the morning greeting, “bon matin,” for the afternoon greeting, “bonne après-midi,” for the evening greeting, “bonsoir,” and for the goodnight wish, “bonne nuit.”

In SF generally “bonjour” is used for morning and afternoon so “bon matin” and “bonne après-midi” are not employed.

“Comment que vous se sente aujourdh’hui?” (How are you feeling today?) “Comment que t’te (tu te) sentes aujourd’hui?” (How art thou feeling today?) (I do not feel quite well today, dear.)

(I hope (wish) that you will be well soon [reestablished in good health])

*The future simple (serez) was used in our area rather than the “present subjunctive” for vous in many cases.

“Comment la famille?” (How is the family?) “Mais, y sont tous gaillard.” (But, they are all healthy.)

“Et la tienne, y sont gaillard?” (And yours, are they healthy?)

(Yes, nearly all are in good health, except the smallest one. She caught a bad cold lately.)

(You give it the syrup prepared by the old treater, and make it drink a lot of herb tea prepared by him also.)

(Look who is it that is buying her groceries!) (Let us tell her hello before she leaves (goes outside) of the store.)

(Good morning Mrs. Comeaux, how does it go with you today?)

(I think that I will make it if I were to try a little more than yesterday.) (Thank you well, I am very happy that you take an interest in me.)

**Remember that Cajuns use “plusse” for more than, “plus” for more and “pu” for no more.

When my grandmother met a stranger she always said, “J’sus très contend de faire votre connaissance.” (I am very happy to make your acquaintance.) Generally the reply in very polite Cajun was “Mais, moi pareillement.” (But, me the same.)

If this were a first time meeting the Titles were used, such as “Madame, Madmoiselle, [Demoiselle, Mamselle] and Monsieur.” (Madam, Miss and Mister)

From time to time you would hear “la vieille,” “vieille,” and “vieux” or “le vieux.” (The old woman [respectfully] or simply old, being feminine it was understood to apply to the woman. The same for “the old man, or “old.”) That was generally heard after acquaintances had been made. (Of course “vieille and vieux” were used by wife (”la femme”) and husband (”le mari”) when referring to each other. This again was in a respectful manner.) I heard that often in conversations between Cajun husbands and wives.

“Rentrez (entrez) si vous plait.” (You come in, please.) “Prenez [prends] la chaise ici [icitte]. (You, thou take the chair here, or be seated here.)

When unexpected company arrived at supper time: “On est justement après s’mettre à la table, venez donc voir vous mettre avec nous-autres.” (We are just about to put ourselves at the table, please come and set yourselves with us.)

“Mais, on a pas venu pour manger.” (We did not come to eat.) (It is not nice to eat in front of you, I think that you can force yourselves to eat a little mouthful, anyhow.)

(Oh well, I think that we can at least be your company at the table during your supper.)

(And look, there is enough for all yes.) “O.k. (O.K., if you insist it, we will put ourselves with you [at the table].] (I guess we will be able to force ourselves to eat a little bit, all smells very delicious.)

These are just a few nice words that I heard growing up in a strickly Cajun atmosphere. If anyone of you who have registered would like to add a comment or two under this post, please feel free to do so and I will moderate them.

Port Arthur En Texas, Ou Port Arthur En Louisiane?

CLICK HERE TO HEAR THE AUDIO TO THIS POST

Corrected errors will not show up on the subscribers copies. Please check your copy and see where the text has been corrected. Merci.
As I stated before in one of my posts, someone sent me a letter from Louisiana and the mailing address was my street and house number @ Port Arthur, Louisiana. The letter came to me with no problems.

During the oil boom in that part of the U.S. many Cajuns left Louisiana in search of secular work in the oil industries. I am sure that migration went as far as Houston Texas.

I lived in Port Arthur for 30 years. I raised my family there and the children all received a good education in the school system there. Things have changed since the ’80’s due to the oil economy.

Anyway, you could go into the Port Arthur phone book and find the family names such as Boudreaux and Broussard, more abundant than any other family name.

In view of how Cajuns influenced life in Port Arthur I decided to write a few lines about such influence.

*The verb “rappeler” (to remember or recall) is used by me often in my posts. However, we did use the verb “souvenir” in our Cajun conversations. To me, and that is my view due to my family’s usage of “souvenir,” that verb connotes “to remind.” So if you were to say “j’peux toujours me souvenir…” it would be understood as “to remember, to remind, or bring back to mind something.” Of course “le souvenir” is used as in English as “a token of something.” We use that in Cajun as well.

CLICK HERE TO HEAR THE AUDIO TO THIS POST

“Ramasser des cocos,” was a phrase used in my Cajun circle when speaking to a child, or speaking in a child-like manner.

“Ramasser” is the infinitive verb meaning “to pick up.” “Cocos” is the plural for “eggs” (oeufs) in childish talk (generally the parents would use that when speaking to their children). Eggs would be the first thing to get together for cake baking, so children were asked to pick them fresh from the barn or any other site suitable for hens to lay their eggs.

“Tâteux” is the plural in childish talk for “gâteux” (cakes). “Pour faire des tâteaux” would mean “to make some cakes.”

“C’est du gâteux ça” literally means “it is some cake that” or “it is a piece of cake” is understood in conversation. In childish talk it would be “c’est du tâteux ça.” Like in English it denotes being able to do something easily.

I can remember my mother singing a child’s song about rasping potatoes (sweet) to make sweet-potato bread. I can remember just one line and it goes like this: “Allons râper des tatates pour faire des tateux.”

The old home-made rasp was used for that along with all kinds of grating. A piece of tin was arched over a small paddle with a handle and various nail sizes were punched through to make different grating or rasping results.

Parents used such childish talk at times not just in speaking to their children, but also with one another when in a lighter mood.

Another e.g. of childish talk has to do with the nick names or “sobriquets” given to children. My oldest sister was called by my father and mother “soeur,” which means “sister.” She was the oldest of the daughters, so she was viewed as “the sister.” Anyway, mom and dad would call her “toeur.” This was a childish, term of endearment for my sister.  These childish pronunciations stuck. Now when my sister was referred to by my parents to her younger siblings they would use “tetoeur.”

For my oldest brother the “sobriquet” used for him in a respectful manner by my parents was “frère,” which simply means brother. However, that term was viewed as respectful due to the fact that he was the oldest of the siblings. When my parents or my grandmother referred to him, to us, they generally used “frère,” with no other adjective. “Tit frère” would put him as younger, so they would not do that.

Another e.g. of childish words is “le nanane” (sometimes heard “la nanane) meaning “the food, or the goody.” To show that something was tasty to a child, the parent would use “niame, niame,” meaning “goody, goody.” The parent would generally use this expression when enticing the child to eat.

Another needed ingredient was butter. “Le beurre” was made with fresh cream. If there were not a “la baratte” or “churn” in the house, the cream was put in a mason jar and shook “sur les genoux” (on the knees) until the whey separated from the cream and “voilà, le beurre” was created.

Here is a coversation between a mother and a child relative to the the title of this post.

“Mon cher, simplement fais attention.

*”Entendre” is the infinitive for the verb “to hear.” “Attendre” is the infinitive for the verb “to wait for.” Cajuns in my area preferred to use “esperer,” the infinitive verb for “to wait hopefully,” rather than “attendre.” In the process, somehow, I most often heard “entendre” pronounced as “attendre,” however used for “to hear.” I heard my mother tell him to go with you.)

(That is a piece of cake!)

*Le Caveau” was a building with a dirt floor. It had no light apertures. At times potatoes were “helled” in this building. The laying hens were allowed to go in to lay their eggs in the wooden troughs built on the walls about half-way between the floor and ceiling. I always hated to go in that building because of its darkness and tales of snakes snatching the eggs from the hens.

Oui, Si, Et On Voit Presque Pu Les Étoiles

While growing up around one of my grandmothers I would, from time, to time hear her employ the word “si” when she was engaged in formal Cajun.

Later when I took French in school, I learned that to answer yes to a negative question you are to use “si” and not “oui,” that is, if you did not agree with the negative thought.

For e.g.: (using Cajun style of negative “Tu vas pas chez ta fille aujourd’hui? You would say “si” to contradict the negative statement, instead of oui, therefore, indicating that you were going to go visit.) I read where in Quebec rather than “si” “oui, oui,” is used. That may be the case among Cajuns also.*

Another e.g. when coffee was being served the hostess was heard saying “Tu veux pas du café?”  Of course to contradict that negative questioning one would say “si” or “mais oui, j’aimrais du café cher.” (The reply would be given in a tone that would show that you did want coffee.)

Anyway, though “si” is used in modern French, I am sure that when my grandmother engaged in “formal Cajun,” she and her friend would use that way of answering to a negative question. I remember when I was in the eighth grade my father and I went and purchased clothing for my eighth-grade graduation and the shirt was too big. My grandmother took it over to the neighbor’s and she and the neighbor completely revamped the shirt so it would fit me. In their conversation I heard them use “si” when asking certain questions to one another. I never did forget that, because that was not heard in my immediate family.

*I can still hear an answer like “mais, oui, oui, j’vas aller,” when answering to a negative question. Just an interesting tidbit about Cajun folks

On Voit Presque Pu Les Étoiles

In coming back from making a round (visit) with one of our neighbors, there was so many stars in the sky on that night, that I thought that someone had lit some sparkles and then threw them heavenward.

One day, during the recreation recess at school, I threw myself on the ground, and in casting my eyes toward the sky, and to my surprise, I could see, in full day light, some stars. Today the air pollution almost prevent us to see the stars during the night, do you think that we can see them in full day light?
